Port Angeles, WA, USA — March 28, 2007. Fontlab Ltd. announced today the release of TypeTool 3, a major upgrade to the company’s basic font editor.
TypeTool is a basic font editor by Fontlab Ltd. for Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. TypeTool is aimed at students, hobby typographers and creative professionals who occasionally need to create or customize fonts. It allows the user to create new fonts as well as modify existing PostScript Type 1, TrueType and OpenType fonts. Typical uses of TypeTool include creation of new text, dingbat or clipart fonts, customization of existing fonts, adding logos or signatures to fonts, extending fonts with ligatures, old-style figures, fractions, currency symbols, punctuation or international characters.
Version 3 is the first edition of TypeTool that supports OpenType fonts. The users can create new or modify existing OpenType fonts in both the TrueType (.ttf) and the PostScript/CFF (.otf) flavor, with up to 65,000 glyphs. (The ability to edit the advanced typographic OpenType Layout features is not included in TypeTool, so other tools such as FontLab Studio, Microsoft VOLT or Adobe FDK for OpenType need to be used.) Two major new features of TypeTool 3, previously only available in Fontographer and FontLab Studio, the company’s more professional editors, are: support for the bitmap Background layer, into which that the user can import bitmap images or BDF bitmap fonts, and for the Mask layer that can be used to place reference outlines.
In addition to standard Bézier drawing tools familiar to users of Fontographer, Adobe Illustrator, Freehand or FontLab Studio, TypeTool includes an innovative set of VectorPaint tools for realistic bitmap-like outline editing using shaped brush strokes. TypeTool is able to import and export individual glyphs in EPS format, and exchange drawings with Adobe Illustrator through copy-paste. Other major new features of TypeTool 3 include support for the entire Unicode 5.0 codepoint range, improved drawing with open contours and tangent points, multi-line metrics and kerning editing, better printouts, as well as numerous detail improvements.
TypeTool 3 is based on the industry-standard FontLab Studio engine and produces professional-quality Type 1, TrueType and OpenType fonts. Due to the integrated professional autohinting, the screen quality of fonts produced with TypeTool is superb. Fonts edited in TypeTool 3 preserve the original screen hinting and the original OpenType Layout tables as long as glyphs are not modified by the user. The VFB file format used by TypeTool 3 is compatible with Fontlab Ltd.’s other products including FontLab Studio, BitFonter 3, ScanFont and TransType.
TypeTool 3 retails at US$99.00, upgrades for existing TypeTool users are US$39.95. For more information, a free demo version for Mac and Windows, as well as purchase and upgrade options, visit the TypeTool 3 page at http://www.fontlab.com/font-editor/typetool/
