Millersville, MD - Fontlab Ltd., the leading developer of digital typography tools, announced today its eagerly awaited release of Fontlab 4 for Windows. This outstanding upgrade version brings major technological advances to the field of typography. Fontlab 4 is a powerful digital editing tool that gives graphic designers, desktop publishers, printers, and authors access to the flexibility and power of the OpenType font format for the first time, including ligatures, small caps, alternative characters and all other OpenType features currently supported in applications. Users will now be able to create fonts that can automatically substitute fractions, swash caps, superscripts, subscripts, etc. where appropriate in page layout programs and other applications that support OpenType.

In addition, this version of Fontlab includes a new macro language scripting capability that allows the user to write macros in the popular Python scripting language. FontLab aficionados can now create their own plugins and tools. This opens the door to vast time savings as users will be able to write simple scripts to perform tasks which previously required tedious character by character modifications.

Even better, the FontLab interface is now almost completely customizable. Users can create or rearrange menus, toolbars and keystroke shortcuts any way they want. This cuts way down on the learning curve for new users.

Another big boost, for Unicode and CJKV font users, is new, more complete two-byte font compatibility. FontLab 4 can open and edit Unicode fonts with up to five thousand characters - fonts which previously had to be broken down into subfonts in order to be edited.

Previous users (Fontlab 3) are accustomed to the application’s outstanding array of features, which are still a major part of the new version. These include:

· Native TrueType Editor

· Native Type I Editor

· Manual and Automatic Kerning

· Manual and Automatic Hinting

· Multiple Master Fonts with up to 4 Axes

· Sophisticated Vector Paint Tools for Calligraphy.

· Import/Export PC TrueType and Type I Fonts

· TrueType Delta Hinting

· Support for all language code pages, Unicode ranges, encodings and scripts

Now, with the added technological advancements of OpenType and macro scripting, Fontlab 4 is a necessity for every graphic design and publishing professional.

Fontlab 4 retails for US $549.00 (upgrades are US$199.00. Fontlab is also offering crossgrades to Fontographer users for US$199 for a limited period of time.) and the Windows version will begin shipping immediately. The Macintosh version will follow within a few months. Hardware requirements include 8MB Ram, SVGA monitor, and a mouse. Software requirements include WIN95/98/NT/Me/2000/XP.
